North Coal releases Sustainability Report

North Coal has released its 2019 Sustainability Report that discloses the company’s environmental, social, and governance performance for the Michel Coal Project.

This is the first report prepared under the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, a framework selected for its robustness in transparency and accountability. The move to GRI Standards reporting is an example of North Coal’s commitment to continuous improvement and transparency.

Highlights in the report include:

– Achieving zero fatalities and zero lost-time incidents in 2019 and expanding our safety program to improve risk management.

– The small team contributed over 100 volunteer hours to community-based groups and donations or sponsorship to 40 groups.

– Indigenous knowledge holders and elders collected data on-site to contribute to the Closure and Reclamation plans.

This report is a tool for us to expand our transparency and accountability.”

Since 2013, North Coal has engaged with local communities and Indigenous people about Project goals and shared opportunities. The project has taken a long-term view of planning and is considering the land’s use after mining at the beginning. The design is guided by closure goals and returning the land to a place where people can hunt, trap, fish, and gather— a goal developed working alongside the Ktunaxa as part of our closure and reclamation goals.

North Coal is developing the Michel Coal Project, a steel-making coal mine with an expected 25-year mine life, in the southeast corner of BC. North Coal is focused on providing steel-making coal to the global market while ensuring protecting the environment.
