About

The Elk Valley Coal News objective is to deliver balanced news, information, updates and insights into the coal industry and the many stakeholders and businesses invested in the Elk Valley.

The four active open-pit mines account for more than 30,000 jobs and contribute about $4.6 billion to B.C.’s gross domestic product, according to a February 2022 report released by the B.C. Chamber of Commerce.

The Elk Valley’s largest economy continues to be coal mining and we respect the past and present social and economic benefits from the industry. Unfortunately there are several environmental issues associated with the present mines and legacy operations, and mounting pressure from Canadian and international groups to mitigate these issues.

With several new mines proposed for the Elk Valley from various international investment groups, it is more important that ever to be educated on the current status of coal mining and how it will shape the future of the Elk Valley.
