EVR and SAAM Towage Partner to Deploy Electric Tugboats

Electric Tugboats

Elk Valley Resources (EVR), in partnership with SAAM Towage, has deployed two electric tugboats at Neptune Terminals—a groundbreaking initiative for the Port of Vancouver. This marks the port’s first use of electric tugboats, significantly reducing CO2 emissions in EVR’s supply chain.

In addition to cutting emissions, the 100% electric tugs, which began operation in May 2024, generate substantially less marine noise. This reduction in noise pollution benefits marine life in the harbour where the vessels operate, further contributing to the project’s positive environmental impact.

The ElectRA 2300 SX tugs are powered by two Li-ion battery groups, making them zero-emission vessels fully energized by British Columbia’s clean hydroelectric grid. Designed by Vancouver-based Robert Allan Ltd. and constructed at Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey, these tugs are among only a handful of electric tugboats operating worldwide.

This landmark agreement to deploy the electric tugs was first announced in October 2022 and reflects EVR’s ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation and reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.
