Elk Valley Water Quality Plan Achieves Significant Progress

Elk Valley Resources (EVR) is making measurable strides in improving water quality in the Elk Valley through the implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan (EVWQP). This long-term, science-based approach to managing water quality is producing positive results in addressing selenium concentrations in the region.

On November 26, 2024, EVR hosted its annual in-person open house to update the community on the progress made under the EVWQP. The event featured detailed presentations on current water treatment efforts, future projects, and the measurable improvements already underway.

“Our four existing water treatment facilities are successfully removing between 95% and 99% of selenium from treated water,” said Colin Miller, Program Director for Water Quality and Projects, Sustainable Development, EVR. “The plan is working; selenium concentrations have stabilized and are now reducing downstream of treatment. We are committed to further action, with plans to build six additional water treatment facilities by 2027.”

The Elk Valley Water Quality Plan is a comprehensive initiative aimed at ensuring sustainable water quality in the Elk Valley. It focuses on reducing selenium and nitrate concentrations, alongside other key water quality indicators, through a combination of advanced water treatment technologies, robust monitoring systems, and collaboration with local stakeholders.

The program was initiated in 2014 when Teck Coal, previous owner, was facing a pollution problem in which selenium was discovered leaching out of mine sites and collecting in the rivers and streams downstream of their mining operations. The construction of water treatment plants was announced shortly afterward, and the initiative is now generating significant results.

Water Treatment Facilities: Key Achievements
• Current Facilities: Four active treatment facilities, removing up to 99% of selenium.
• Future Expansion: Six new facilities are scheduled to be operational by 2027.
• Downstream Impact: Stabilized and improving water quality downstream of treatment sites.
