CanAus Coal to open by 2020

CanAus Coal says they are still on track to open their new Elk Valley mine by 2020.

Despite some setbacks for CanAus earlier this year that pushed the proposed Michel Creek Coking Coal Mine Project back by six months, all looks good.

Spokesperson Becky Pelkonen says feasibility work has been completed and they hope to re-enter BC’s Environmental Assessment Process early next year. “So once the environmental assessment process is complete, the end goal would be to receive a permit and to open a mine with first coal potentially in 2020 or 2021.” Pelkonen adds their goal is to submit an environmental assessment to the province by 2018.

CanAus Coal Limited (CanAus) is a Canadian resource company based in Sparwood, British Columbia and is a wholly owned subsidiary of CoalMont Pty Ltd (CoalMont), a privately held coal development company. CoalMont holds the rights, through CanAus, to the Michel Creek coal license and application areas. Earlier in the process, the project was projected to have a capacity of about 2.1 million tonnes of clean coal per year.
