Centermount Coal Limited proposed the construction, operation, and decommissioning of an open pit coal mine located approximately 21 kilometres north of Elkford. Bingay has been a mine site for decades and the most recent owner has been working on an environmental assessment for over 10 years.
As proposed, the project would produce 1 million tonnes of coal per year over a mine life of approximately 13 years.
On August 29, 2022 the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has determined it will not extend the three-year time limit for Centermount Coal Limited to provide the required information or studies for the environmental assessment.
The proponent has not provided the Agency with the required information or studies within the legislated time limit.
As a result the environmental assessment for the Bingay Main Coal Project has terminated.
“In accordance with section 181(3) of the Impact Assessment Act, the environmental assessment of the Bingay Main Coal Project pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, has terminated. In accordance with section 181(2) of the Impact Assessment Act, Centermount Coal Limited has not provided the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada with the required information or studies within the legislated time limit of August 28, 2022.”
